As you know, I recently decided to take a “healing sabbatical.” I sincerely appreciate the concerns this decision has raised for many of you, and want to provide a little more information and my vision for the future. First some background: About seven years ago, I experienced a precipitous decline in health. Six years ago, this was diagnosed as neuroborreliosis, or chronic neurological Lyme disease. Since then, I’ve received excellent treatment from traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, naturopaths, and Western medical doctors. I’m happy to say that, with this aggressive treatment regimen, my health has improved, slowly but steadily. The best news is there are strong indications the Lyme disease may now be in remission.
However, for some time now I’ve also been experiencing a variety of other health problems that appear to be autoimmune in nature. It’s very likely this is secondary to the Lyme disease, the treatment, or both, but we’ll never know for sure. What has become increasingly apparent though, as the Lyme disease recedes and I go off antibiotics, is my body needs a significant period of profound rest to restore its normal functional state, and for my immune system in particular to came back into balance. Travelling in particular, and interacting with large groups of people are especially tiring for me right now, and so these are the activities I must temporarily curtail. I have every intention of resuming my regular teaching activities once I have recovered sufficiently to do so.
In the meantime, we’ll continue our Uposatha day gatherings, provide guidance for solo meditation retreats in the Stronghold, and, of course, I’ll have more time to devote to the upcoming book publication. One of the most important activities that will continue during this sabbatical period is the Dharma Treasure teacher training program. Some time in the not too distant future, I’ll announce the beginning of the next teacher training course, outline the requirements for participation, and invite applications. Another project for this period, will be to convert some of the extensive collection of oral teachings into edited written form and a series of podcasts. I invite anyone with relevant skills to work closely with me on this. Still another is to produce a series of Youtube videos, and I’ll be very grateful for assistance from of any of you with the necessary skills and equipment. These are all things I can do from the comfort of my home, and on a schedule that doesn’t tax my limited energy resources or interfere with healing.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding. I believe we all share the wish that all beings be free from suffering and ill-will, filled with loving-kindness, and truly happy. Together, we can make a difference.
In joy and love,
